The Minister in charge of Britain's broadband has announced ambitious new plans for the county's internet access and called the previous government's pledge for a universal speed of two megabits "pitifully unambitious".
Culture Minister Jeremy Hunt said that the UK risked being left far behind other countries such as South Korea, who were planning speeds up to 500 times as fast.
Although he did not give exact details or announce any new funding, Hunt said that he wanted to create the "best superfast broadband network in Europe".
He also said that such a network could add £18 billion to the UK's GDP and create at least 60,000 new jobs.
