According to the Financial Times, Google has developed a new technology that allows it to identify inadequate areas of content coverage on the internet.
The news comes at a time when typical content providers – such as The Times – are erecting paywalls around their website.
Désiré Athow, the editor of ITProPortal.com, commented: "There are numerous other ways of 'guessing' what's hot."
Among these are Google's own Trends solution, Google news, Bing Trends, and Twitter.
Mr Athow noted this could aid Google in its efforts to algorithmically anticipate the news agenda – due to "the rise of paywalled content and related apps."
