A new report claims that downloads of mobile applications are increasing in popularity so fast that they will soon outsell CDs.
The study carried out on behalf of app store website Getjar.com predicts that mobile app downloads will be worth more than 17 and a half billion dollars by 2012, more than the market for CDs.
While just 7 billion downloads were recorded last year, within two years time there are expected to be more than 50 billion apps downloaded annually.
The report points out that although mobile apps have been around since the late 90s, it's the success of Apple's app store, along with the iPhone, that has been the catalyst for the recent explosion in interest.
